Price Hike : Rapid KL’s Integrated LRT Monthly Travel Card
If you commute on Rabbit KL’s LRT lines frequently, you probably know there are some unhappiness brewing among the commuters.
Yes, they said we are going to have integration… Or that’s how they called it. For example, Star and Putra lines have been renamed Ampang, Sri Petaling and Kelana Jaya lines.
There’s nothing physical. The interchange is still as user-unfriendly as possible. Of course the respective elevated and underground structures had been built and nobody is expecting any miracle to happen. But the proper covered walkway connexion /linkage (sound so Singlish laa, covered walkway…) between the two Masjid Jamek stations, elevated and underground, is still absent. You still get soaked if you change trains when it’s raining (or flooding, which is not that rare in KL, after all). But for the VIPigs VIPs in Rapid KL, it’s a non-issue, so far.

The newly introduced integration also comes in another aspect, which is pricing. Previously, the Monthly Travel Card (MTC, which allows unlimited travel on one of the lines during that month) for each of Putra and Star line was RM 70, while the MTC for both lines were priced at RM 110. Now, these are replaced by an integrated MTC, which allows unlimited travel on both lines, to be only RM 90.
For many who do not need to use both lines, that is obviously a hefty price hike of 28.57%, from RM 70 to RM 90. Of course it could be a suprised discount for those who used to pay RM 110 for the combined MTC, but… Shouldn’t those who just travel on one line be given a cheaper option ?
Had it been the case of SMRT’s North-South line and East-West line in $ingapore, which do integrate seamlessly, few would argue for a separate pricing. Apparently the stupidity on the part of Barisan Nasional which allows the design of totally separated lines is to be blamed. Nobody will see Putra and Star as one for many years to come, I dare say.
In a way, the new integrated MTC makes sense too. For example, assuming that distance between stations are similar, shouldn’t the fare for everyone travelling for 2 stations be the same ? Logically yes. But the separate pricing scheme of Putra and Star makes it impossible.

For Central Market to Dang Wangi on Putra line or Bandaraya to Plaza Rakyat on Star line, it’s a distance of 2 stations. But what about from Central Market to Bandaraya ? You gotta fork out almost double, eventhough it’s still a distance of 2 stations. How could the government let this happen ?
So, should fares still be calculated independently in an integrated network ?
While I argue for an integrated fare structure, I can’t close my eyes to the ridiculous fare hike of 28.57%. However, why do we need MTC in the first place ? Why don’t these people pay for each and every trip they travel like in almost every other city in the world ? Not all of them are school kids or senior citizens, I suppose ?
My two cents

Hmmm, Thisremindme the proposal plan of integrating BTS Skytrian & MRTA Subway …
However, it has not been Materialized yet due to the Political Football between Democrat [Thai version of DAP & PAS] who runs BMA and BTSC and TRT [Thai version of UMNO] who runs MRTA Subway and SRT Commuter lines.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN.
The reason why I wrote this comment/complaint in this website, I would like to highlight to the attention of RAPID KL BUS MANAGEMENT the incident that happened to me this morning (16/8/05) at about 6.15 am. This is not the first incident that happened to me and I’m sure it also happened to others RAPID KL passengers.
THESE IS WHAT HAPPENED TO ME IN THIS MORNING INCIDENT:-
As usual I took the RAPID KL Bus to work this morning at about 6.15 am from Ampang Campuran to KLCC. I paid RM2.00 for the bus fare. After giving the driver my RM2.00 I waited for him to give me my ticket, instead of giving me my ticket the driver asked me to go inside without issuing the ticket but I insistead for him to give me my ticket. I asked him few times for my ticket but the driver keep on showing me a signal using his hand asking me to moved inside. I was so angry & insistead for my ticket. Guess after he feels annoyed with me he then issued the ticket but in a very rude manner. There was few Indonesian passengers in front of me who was on board the same bus as I am that he did not issued the ticket to them as well. From my understand, ticket are strictly suppose to be issued to all the passengers for some reason. But most of the time ticket are NOT issued when needed.
This is a serious matter that the Management of RAPID KL should look into it. How could we as the passengers able to claim any insurance if by any reason accident cases happened as the ticket are not issued by the drivers.
I would like the MANAGEMENT of RAPID KL bus to know that I am not happy with the RAPID KL bus services and the drivers attitude. And also I would like to know where are all the ticket inspectors who are supposed to do their routine checking on their bus drivers in every pick-up point. The ticket inspectors was on the ‘field’ for few weeks ago but I hardly seen them now a days in doing their routine checking. The MANAGEMENT of RAPID KL should take this as a serious issue in order to implement good public transport services.
And also I would like to highlight about most of the RAPID KL buses are in bad condition. For instants air-cond are not working properly, some of the sits are not in good condition, bus are dirty, etc. MANAGEMENT of RAPID KL should take a good security measures of their buses. RAPID KL are the most popular public transport in Klang Valley but their services yet to be ‘proud’ of to the public expectation.
MANAGEMENT of RAPID KL, please do take serious action to all the RAPID KL bus drivers. It seems the Rapid KL bus drivers are not friendly & most of them are being RUDE to the passengers. They are not being SINCERE & HONEST in doing their job by taking the company’s money by NOT issuing ticket to the passengers and most of the time the bus fare are not dropped in the ticket ‘machine’ by the ‘order’ of most of the drivers so that it is much easier for them to ‘dropped’ the money into their own pocket. Also please do the routine checking to all the RAPID KL buses for security reason.
Concern Passenger

Rapid KL reminds me Bangkok BMTA Aircon Buses and the dilapidated but speed-demon private runned buses …
ShinShin, you should come upwith the jokes on RapidKL Buses in the same way Bangkokians have come up with the jokes on each BMTA bus route …
